We are lucky nowadays to have so many new ways to communicate with each other, to stay connected and to reach out to help our fellow alcoholics. Smart phones, email, texting, social networking sites … what would Bill and Bob have thought of all this? In this issue, we feature stories about how AA members are using the various new forms of technology to get and stay sober.

In the story, "Room Service," a lonely, drunken woman in a hotel turns on her laptop and finds a website that saves her life. An alcoholic in Australia gets speakers from around the world to speak—and appear—at his AA meeting through technology in "Screen Saver." Old sober buddies meet again in their original meeting space after finding each other on a social networking site in "Click, Click, Reunion!". Also, check out our new Singleness of Purpose department.

It's hard enough coming into AA for the first time, but when you're a teenager, or in your 20s or even 30s, getting sober can be extra scary. Sometimes it helps if you can identify with an alcoholic who turned their life around early. In the January issue, we feature stories by young people getting sober.

In "Not So Tough," a boy hits the streets by 13 and finds AA by 15. "The journey my life has taken since I've been sober is amazing," he writes. "I can't believe the places I've gone and the person I've become." In "I'm Too Young," a mom in her late 20s does her best to stay away from AA, until one day, two women her age bring a meeting into jail. Having a blast while doing service at young peoples' conferences is the focus of "Young, Crazy, Sober, Fun."

(A.A.W.S.) is pleased to announce that our two central texts describing the A.A. program of action for recovery from alcoholism are now available in eBook format in English, French, and Spanish.

Publication in this digital media format will give broader distribution and access to A.A.’s basic textbook, Alcoholics Anonymous, known popularly as the Big Book, which has helped millions of men and women throughout the world, and in all walks of life, find a new and satisfying way of life without alcohol.

The current, official publisher’s version of the Big Book (Fourth Edition), along with Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions, can be purchased for US $6.00 each from the A.A.W.S. Online Store for access on iPhones and iPads. The A.A. eReader App can be downloaded for free from the Apple App store. In the near future, the books will also be available for the various Android platforms.

“We are thrilled at the prospect of reaching an even wider audience to offer A.A.’s message of hope to the still-suffering alcoholic who may not have had access to our basic literature,” said Ward Ewing, nonalcoholic trustee and Chairperson of the General Service Board of A.A. “In addition, this eBook format will enhance the way members can read their favorite A.A. texts.”

A.A. members, many of whom read, re-read, and quote from the literature at A.A. meetings as part of their recovery, will be able to search for specific passages quickly and highlight key words and sentences in the highly portable format.

Also, because the font size and type can be changed, these eBooks will be more universally accessible to those members needing larger print.

Alcoholics Anonymous was first published in 1939, when the “Fellowship” of A.A. was four years old and had a membership of about one hundred. It was written by co-founder Bill W., with each chapter being thoroughly edited and vetted by early A.A. members in Akron, Ohio, and New York City.

The second edition of Alcoholics Anonymous appeared in 1955, when A.A. membership had grown to about 146,000 in 50 countries. Two further editions followed, in 1976 and 2001.

In 1975, the Big Book sold its one-millionth copy in the English language. That copy was presented to then President Richard Nixon. In 2005, the twenty-five-millionth copy was presented to the Warden of San Quentin Prison, where the first A.A. prison group was held. In 2010, the thirty-millionth copy was presented to the American Medical Association, which declared alcoholism an illness in 1956.

First published in April 1953, Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions was written by Bill W., with the benefit of hindsight and experience, to offer an explicit view of the principles by which A.A. members recover and by which their Fellowship functions.

Today, more than one million copies of the Big Book are distributed every year in the English language alone (it is translated into 64 languages), and A.A. membership has grown to approximately two million with a presence in more than 180 countries.

The holidays can be a stressful time for AAs, especially newcomers. With all the parties and celebrations that the season brings, there can also be a good deal of imbibing and family tension. IN a time of year that can quickly become crazy, this issue is devoted to stories by members about how they handle the holidays and make them well, un-crazy.

In "Not Ready," a newcomer at her first holiday party writes about how she deals with being surrounded by booze. In "Lifesaver," another beginner ends up leading a chilly New England meeting with even newer members.

When he got to heaven, God was showing him around. They came to a modest little house with a faded Patriots flag in the window.

"This house is yours for eternity Tom, said God. "This is very special; not everyone gets a house up here."

Tom felt special, indeed, and walked up to his house. On his way up the porch, he noticed another house just around the corner. It was a huge 3-story mansion with Orange and Blue sidewalks and drive ways, a 50 foot tall flagpole with an enormous Broncos logo flag waving, a swimming pool in shape of a horse, a Broncos logo in every window, and a Tim Tebow jersey on the front door.

Tom looked at God and said "God, I'm not trying to be ungrateful, but I have a question. I was an all-pro QB, I won 3 Super Bowls, and I even went to the Hall of Fame."

God said "So what's your point Tom?" "Well, why does Tim Tebow get a better house than me?"

God chuckled, and said "Tom, that's not Tim's house, it's mine."

Comment on: Tebow

The Blarney Stone traveled to Denver to kiss Tebow.

Comment on: Tebow

Tebow put Humpty Dumpty back together again.

Comment on: Tebow

When Tebow was in college, he was the only kid allowed to use a #1 pencil on his exams.

Comment on: Tebow

Tebow doesn’t make a splash when he jumps in water, the water is just getting out of his way.

Comment on: Tebow

This just in: Popular Science has announced that Tebow is the 119th element.

1. I believe that if anything is worth doing, it would have been done already.

2. I shall never move quickly, except to avoid more work or find excuses.

3. I will never rush into a job without a lifetime of consideration.

4. I shall meet all of my deadlines directly in proportion to the amount of bodily injury I could expect to receive from missing them.

5. I firmly believe that tomorrow holds the possibility for new technologies, astounding discoveries, and a reprieve from my obligations.

6. I truly believe that all deadlines are unreasonable regardless of the amount of time given.

7. I shall never forget that the probability of a miracle, though infinitesimally small, is not exactly zero.

8. If at first I don't succeed, there is always next year.

9. I shall always decide not to decide, unless of course I decide to change my mind.

10. I shall always begin, start, initiate, take the first step, and/or write the first word, when I get around to it.

11. I obey the law of inverse excuses which demands that the greater the task to be done, the more insignificant the work that must be done prior to beginning the greater task.

12. I know that the work cycle is not plan/start/finish, but is wait/plan/plan.

13. I will never put off until tomorrow, what I can forget about forever.

14. I will become a member of the ancient Order of Two- Headed Turtles (the Procrastinator's Society) if they ever get it organized.

15. If, I didn't procrastinate, I wouldn't having anything to do tomorrow.
